Intelligent Insurer: New retro player Phoenix targets $100m

The chief underwriting officer of reinsurance start-up Phoenix CRetro Reinsurance Company has said he believes the business could provide as much as $100 million of capacity by the 2015 renewals and he hopes to have financial institutions on board as investors by the Monte Carlo Rendez-Vous.

Phoenix CRetro will offer capital providers in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) and countries that were formerly part of the Soviet Union (an area known as the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)) access to catastrophe retrocessional reinsurance business.

According to a report in Intelligent Insurer on Friday, June 21, Phoenix CRetro Reinsurance Company is a Bermuda domiciled special purpose insurance vehicle registered with the Bermuda Monetary Authority on May 9. The report said that the company has also formed an office in London.

A new firm called Phoenix CRetro has launched targeting the catastrophe retrocessional reinsurance market while offering a way for institutional investors and capital providers such as re/insurers in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) which consists of countries formerly part of the Soviet Union and the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) to access the return of the reinsurance market.

Phoenix CRetro Reinsurance Company Ltd. is a Bermuda domiciled special purpose insurance vehicle and a segregated accounts company, which was registered with the Bermuda Monetary Authority on the 9th May. The head office of the firm is in Bermuda but it will operate a satellite office in London to be close to the Lloyd’s of London insurance market, from where most of its underwriting business will be sourced.

Twelve Capital to manage Falcon Private Bank ILS funds

Swiss based specialist insurance and reinsurance-linked investment manager Twelve Capital has agreed a transaction with Falcon Private Bank, a boutique Swiss weather manager, which will see Twelve Capital take on the management of the Falcon insurance-linked securities (ILS) business and investment funds.

The agreement will see ILS investment funds domiciled and regulated in Luxembourg and Switzerland, and any other Falcon ILS business such as managed accounts we assume, integrated along with the existing management team into Twelve Capital’s operations. Twelve Capital says that it will guarantee continuity for the existing Falcon Private Bank clients and will ensure that the Falcon ILS business is optimally integrated in Twelve Capital’s core business.
