“Last years’ three hurricanes together — the $135 billion of losses — are a one in 10 year event not a one in a 100 year event,” John Dacey, chief financial officer of Swiss Re, told CNBC’s Joumanna Bercetche on Friday.

The company posted net profit of $1.0 billion during the first half of the year, down from $1.2 billion a year earlier.

The insurance industry is still recovering from its costliest year on record in 2017, following a series of major hurricanes, fires and earthquakes in North America.

“We’ll have to adjust”: Expert on the forecast of natural disasters in the Russian Federation

ORIGINAL FULL PUBLICATION IN RUSSIAN HERE

The weather forecasters predicted an increase in the number of natural disasters in Russia. These conclusions were broadcasted on Sputnik radio by Alexei Kokorin, Director of the “Climate and Energy” program of WWF Russia.

According to EMERCOM’s “Antistikhia” Center the number of major natural disasters in Russia will increase steadily and can reach 16 cases per year.

This happens for two reasons: climate change and human economic activity. In general, the increase in the number of disasters repeats the trend of rising temperatures on the planet. This follows from the document available to RIA Novosti.

It is also noted that the increased risk of catastrophes poses a significant threat to the population and the economy. Over the past 20 years, more than three million people in the world have been the victims of man-made and natural disasters, more than 800 million have been affected.

More than 90 million Russians live in the areas of potential damage. This is 60% of the country’s population. Annual economic damage (direct and indirect) from natural and man-made disasters can reach 1.5-2% of GDP, that is between 675 billion to 900 billion rubles (USD 11,8 – 15,8 bln.)

According to  “Antistikhia”, more than 70% of hazardous weather events that bring social and economic losses occur in a warm period. So, last year 81% of disasters fell on the gap from April to October.

Russian Property/Casualty Insurance Sector Carries High Risk Despite Expected Economic Growth, Says S&P Global Ratings’ Report

ORIGINAL PUBLICATION HERE

S&P Global Ratings said that it assesses industry and country risk in the Russian property/casualty (P/C) insurance sector as high, reflecting that high country risk outweighs the intermediate industry risk.

In their view, high country risks in Russia (foreign currency rating: BB+/Positive/B, local currency: BBB-/Positive/A-3) create an unfavorable operating environment for insurers. Although they expect real GDP growth of 1.7% per year, on average, over 2017-2020, they see this level as low and not sufficient to significantly boost the development of the P/C insurance sector. Russian economic growth continues to be volatile, limited by the state’s dominant role in the economy, low productivity, adverse demographics, sanctions, and the challenging investment climate.

Helping to Improve Developing Countries’ Earthquake Resilience

Earthquakes strike around the clock and around the globe, hitting some communities far harder than others. Developing resilience starts with a deep understanding of the perils faced, and that calls for resources that vulnerable communities often don’t have access to.

Seismic hazard maps, for example, show how earthquake hazards (measured as the likelihood of experiencing earthquake shaking of various intensities) vary across a region or country. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) describes its National Seismic Hazard Maps as “first and foremost a suite of products aimed at improving earthquake-resilient construction in the United States.” As well as forming the basis for building codes, seismic hazard maps can also be used to create mitigation strategies, loss models, and seismic hazard zones. They can be invaluable tools for insurers and reinsurers, government agencies, land use managers, and industries.
